Now, you might well be thinking that this is a really messy and random way of working. You might also be right.
What I really want to say with this is that there's no right or wrong way to work. Some artists might be able to draw everything in a single layer without erasing or altering anything. Other people might redraw the same sketch or lineart over and over until it's perfect. Then there's people like me who change images as they're working on them. In fact, there's as many ways of working as there are artists in the world.
You might now be wondering why I'm telling you this.
It's because I sometimes get heartbreaking comments from young artists who seem genuinely intimidated by some of the artwork they see on dA. It seems as though they see a finished piece of artwork - perfect, professional and awe inspiring, perhaps - and think that they must be 'professional' to achieve such results. I suppose we've all been there at some point, having seen a piece of art that was just so amazing it makes you question why you insist on continuing with art when you could never be as good. Or it might make you so obsessed with perfect techniques and getting everything absolutely right that suddenly art becomes tedious and disheartnening.
But art should be fun and enjoyable and awesome. And you shouldn't always take it too seriously.
If you're worried you're not getting any better or you'll never be as good as so-and-so, don't worry, you will. And if you think your work will never look professional, well there's no such thing. Not really. There's just some lucky people who happen to make money from their art, it's doesn't necessarily mean they're better than you.
So find a way of working that suits you and don't be concerned with how people say you should work. Enjoy drawing, scribble over things, change your mind halfway through a piece and rock on! Because your art is about you and you should enjoy it and be proud of yourself. Because we are all awesome. </ motivational>
