Flash Gallery + Features

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 10, 2012, 7:40 AM

Guys, Flash is awesome.

The Flash gallery here on deviantART needs some love.

Flash pieces can receive quite a few comments, and perhaps quite a lot of love, from people who play the games or watch the animations but very few seem to ever get featured or promoted. There's no Flash Community Volunteer at the moment so Daily Deviations from this gallery are few and far between, which is a crying shame. There's some absolutely amazing talent out there working, or even just dabbling, with Flash and it seems a shame that their work may not get the community-wide attention it deserves.

The attitude towards certain Flash pieces can be a little dismissive, even within the Flash community itself. Dress up games, I've noticed, tend to be seen as just dress up games, as though they are somehow inferior, as though the hundreds of pieces of art work and days of programming that can go into making one are irrelevent.
My Avengers Helicarrier Playset was declined from a Flash Game group here on dA because it is essentially a dress up game. So, all the character art, the comics, the unlockables, the interactive programming, the love and affection that went into making that didn't count for anything because you couldn't shoot at anything or make the characters walk? Nice. And, unfortunately, I'm sure I'm not the only one to have encountered this kind of thing.

Not that it's all gloom and doom, of course. There have been some wonderful pieces awarded with DDs and there are some amazing artists out there doing what they can to promote Flash and its versatility. Look up Flash tutorials on dA and you'll find some amazing guides that make working with Flash manageable if not easy. Who knows, you might also find yourself tempted to have a little go yourself.

If you've never really delved into the gallery before, allow me to give you a little push to do so with a selection of some of my favourite Flash pieces below. The following features include RPGs, dress up games, animations, point-and-click games, playsets and more.
And one of my own. Just because XD

Avengers Helicarrier Playset by Gasara SquidPig Dress Up Game by SqueakyToybox Calvin's Story -Adventure Game by steffne Dessert Maker - flash game v1.4 (22 recipes) by PyroGoth snut's flash draw by snut The Music Lights by Qinni Interactive N's Room (Pokemon Black and White) by staticwind Phantom Seeds by zeiva gubby's leaf collect by snut Dressup Avengers by Arlequinne by Arlequinne Flash Toy - Shoe by AngryPotato Krok Krok Paradise by ethe Madoka Magica Dress Up Game by staticwind Royal Dress-Maker game by sarriathmoonghost

I don't consider myself qualified enough to apply for the position of Flash Community Volunteer but if anyone out there has been thinking about it, why not give it a go? You'd be doing that gallery a wonderful service. You'll have my unending support too ♥

In the meantime I'll keep suggesting DDs to whomever I can and hopefully bring a little more attention to this wonderful form of art.

Hopefully I'll have made a little start here.

There is so much you can do with Flash, not just shoot 'em games or whatever. In Collage, one of the assignments we had was to create a flash game, another was a short flash animation and the last (off the top of my head) was a flash portfolio. Last year in UNI, on of the module ICA's was to create an interactive journal with a subject of your choosing (and we did two version!). All rather different, but all still flash and took a lot of work! And if your more a designer than a programmer, it might take more work to get it right.

This year, one of my modules has us learning external ActionScript - blank canvas with everything pulled in via ActionScript. Anyone that does that has even more work cut out for them!

I know how much work can go into a flash creation and to reject one from a group because it's "it is essentially a dress up game"... Even if it's not the best thing in the world, the creator will have put a lot of work in it and that deserves to be repected.

Why don't you consider yourself qualified enough? And thank you for this wonderful feature, I love them all!

Because I don't fully understand Flash, mainly. I think that if you're going to be the moderator of a certain gallery you should have a really good understanding of the medium and the pieces created from it. If I were to be accepted I would like to be able to support the gallery fully by helping people with Flash, discuss actionscript and troubleshooting, provide tutorials and examples of diffrent ways you can use it but I really don't have the knowledge to be able to do that. I would want to be a really hands-on moderator to make the most of the position. But if no one applies for the position I might just apply anyway and learn as I go along. I suppose it might be better to have a slightly wonky moderator than none at all. ^^

Ah, you're welcome. It was a pleasure to gather all of these wonderful things together to share. :tighthug:

Ah, I completely understand what you're saying u_u Well in that case I hope that a flash user who, under those qualifications, does have a good grip on flash as well as the time to put into moderating and helping other flash users will step up to the task :)

I'm not all the way through them all but each of them are wonderful and absolutely enjoyable
